10 signs you don’t know what you truly want in life

Sometimes, it can feel like you’re lost in a fog, just drifting aimlessly. Like you don’t know what you truly want in life.

Sound familiar? If so, welcome to the club.

A lot of us feel this way. We may not even realize that we’re unsure of our own desires.

Though it might feel tough to acknowledge, it’s important to address this confusion. After all, how can you chase your dreams if you don’t know what they are?

So today, I’m going to share some signs that you might not know what you truly want in life.

Before we dive in, know that getting to these realizations might be a little uncomfortable. But remember, my intention isn’t to make you feel bad about yourself. It’s about helping you uncover the truth so you can start making changes.

So, are you ready? Let’s dive in.

1) You’re often feeling restless

I remember a time when I was constantly feeling restless. I was working in a job that paid well, had great colleagues, and yet, I was uneasy.

There was this nagging feeling that something was missing, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was.

You see, restlessness can be a clear sign that you’re not truly satisfied with where you’re at in life—a sign that you don’t know what you truly want. You’re just going through the motions without any real sense of purpose or direction.

If you’re feeling this way, take some time to reflect.

What is causing this restlessness? Is it your job? Your relationships?

If you’re not sure, that’s okay, too. The key here is to start asking yourself these questions.

2) You constantly compare yourself to others

Another sign is the constant comparison to others. I’d find myself scrolling through social media looking at people’s lives thinking, “I wish I had that.”

But here’s the thing: comparing ourselves to others isn’t going to bring us happiness or clarity about what we want in life. It’s just going to make us feel worse about ourselves.

I came to understand that comparing myself to others was a sign of my own uncertainty about what I wanted. It was easier to look at someone else’s life and think “I want that” than to figure out what it was that I truly desired.

So I asked myself: what am I really longing for? Is it the things other people have, or is it about finding my own sense of fulfillment and happiness?

When I found the answers, I was able to figure out what I want. And you can, too—so long as you’re willing to ask yourself the same questions.

3) You’re always busy, but never productive

Do you find yourself constantly busy but at the end of the day wondering what you’ve actually achieved?

This could be another sign that you don’t know what you truly want in life.

In this study, it was found that people who are always busy are often using busyness as a source of their self-worth.

By filling their lives with tasks, they can avoid confronting the bigger questions about what they really want, because they’re too caught up in thinking that their work is what gives them a high sense of self-worth.

But even if being busy gives us a sense of purpose, sometimes, it can be misplaced. It’s like running on a hamster wheel – you’re moving a lot, but not getting anywhere.

So, if you find yourself stuck in the ‘busy trap’, it might be time to step back and reassess. What are you avoiding? What would happen if you slowed down?

If you take time to try and answer these questions, it could give you an opportunity to discover what you truly want in life.

4) You’re not excited about the future

When was the last time you felt a surge of excitement for what’s to come?

When you know what you want in life, thinking about the future often brings a sense of anticipation and joy. But if you’re feeling more dread than excitement, it could be a sign that you’re not clear on what you truly want.

Imagine waking up each day with a sense of purpose and direction, excited for the opportunities ahead. That’s what knowing your desires can bring. But when you’re unclear about your wants, the future can seem vague and daunting.

It’s okay to not have all the answers. It’s okay to feel scared. But don’t let this fear stop you from exploring your desires. Sometimes, it’s in the midst of uncertainty that we find our true passions and goals.

5) You often feel unfulfilled

I recall a time when I had everything that was supposed to make me happy—a good job, a loving family, a comfortable home—yet I still felt unfulfilled.
I was checking all the boxes, doing everything “right”, but there was this lingering feeling of emptiness.

This could be another sign that you don’t know what you truly want in life. When you’re doing things just because they’re expected of you or because they’re what everyone else is doing, it can leave you feeling hollow.

It took me some time to realize that fulfillment doesn’t come from ticking boxes or meeting societal expectations. It comes from pursuing what truly matters to you and from living in alignment with your own desires and values.

6) You’re constantly second-guessing yourself

I remember when I would spend hours, even days, pondering over a decision, feeling anxious and uncertain. It was exhausting.

What I realized was that this indecisiveness was stemming from my unclear vision of what I really wanted. Once I got clear on my desires, decision-making became a lot simpler.

What I’m trying to say is that second-guessing is a common symptom of not knowing what you truly want in life. If you’re always doubting your decisions, it may be because you’re not confident in your own desires.

So, if you’re constantly second-guessing yourself, it might be an indication that you need to spend some time figuring out your true desires.

7) You’re easily influenced by others

Are you easily swayed by the opinions and desires of others? This could be a sign that you don’t know what you truly want in life.

When we are unclear about our own desires, we tend to let others influence our decisions. We might pick up a hobby because our friend is into it or choose a career path because our parents think it’s the best choice.

While it’s good to consider advice from others, it’s even more important to know what you truly want. So if you’re finding that you’re easily influenced by others, it may be time to dig deep and discover your own desires.

8) You feel stuck

Feeling stuck or stagnant can be another sign that you don’t know what you truly want in life.

In my experience, when I felt stuck, it was often because I was living a life that didn’t align with my true desires. It felt like I was spinning my wheels but going nowhere.

It’s okay to feel stuck sometimes; it’s a part of life.

But remember, feeling stuck is often just a sign that it’s time for change. It’s an opportunity to take a step back, evaluate your life, and figure out what you truly want.

9) You’re not happy

Happiness is subjective and can mean different things to different people.

However, a general sense of unhappiness can be a sign that you don’t know what you truly want in life.

If you’re constantly chasing happiness but never quite attaining it, it could be because you’re chasing the wrong things. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that certain things will make us happy, but true happiness comes from living a life that aligns with our authentic desires.

10) You don’t know what your passion is

Discovering your passion isn’t always easy. It takes time, self-reflection, and sometimes a bit of trial and error.

But once you find it, it can guide you towards what you truly want in life.

So if you’re unsure about your passion, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Take the time to explore different interests and activities. You might just stumble upon something that lights your fire.

Final thoughts

Not knowing what you truly want in life is something many of us struggle with. But by recognizing these signs and taking some time to self-reflect, we can start to uncover our true desires and take steps towards a more fulfilling life.
