People who let their mind slide during the quiet stretch of a task and snap back just before it gets hard may not be undisciplined, a preregistered clock-task study suggests they may be strategically modulating their attention.

You know the shape of it. Twenty minutes into something that requires watching — a meeting where your part comes later, a stretch of highway with no exits, a form that repeats the same field forty times — and the mind slips its collar. Then, just before the part that actually matters, it comes back. Not necessarily with a jolt of panic, but more like a light being switched on in a room that had been left dim.

Most of the language used for that pattern is disciplinary. Drifting is treated as a lapse, while catching yourself is credited to luck. But a preregistered study by Matthew S. Welhaf, Julie M. Bugg, and Jonathan B. Banks, published in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review in 2025, points to a more complicated interpretation. In a predictable laboratory task involving 269 participants, mind wandering changed as the moment requiring a response drew nearer.

That does not prove that every mid-task drift is purposeful or that attention is a resource people consciously ration. It does suggest that mind wandering can respond to the changing demands of a task rather than simply reflecting a loss of control.

A task built so that drifting has a predictable cost

Studying this pattern requires a task in which the demanding moment is scheduled and visible. The clock task provides exactly that. Participants watch a hand move around an analog clock face and press a button whenever it reaches 12 o’clock. The hand completes each rotation in 20 seconds, so participants know when the required response is approaching.

Periodic thought probes interrupt the task and ask participants whether their attention was on the task or elsewhere. These probes allow researchers to sample mind wandering at different points in the clock’s rotation rather than asking participants to reconstruct their attention afterward.

In this literature, “strategic” mind wandering has a specific meaning. It does not mean that a person never loses focus or deliberately chooses every off-task thought. It means that mind wandering is distributed according to predictable task demands, occurring more often when the target is distant and declining as the required response approaches.

Paul Seli and his colleagues reported this pattern in 2018. Their participants reduced their mind wandering as the clock hand moved closer to the predictable target. That finding suggested people could modulate off-task thought in anticipation of an approaching demand.

Welhaf, Bugg, and Banks set out to replicate that result in a larger, preregistered study. They also investigated which individual differences, if any, were associated with stronger strategic modulation.

The pattern held, and one measure predicted who showed it most strongly

The replication supported the original finding. Participants reported more mind wandering when the target was farther away and less as the clock hand approached the point at which they needed to respond.

The researchers also measured working memory capacity, fluid intelligence, spontaneous and deliberate trait mind wandering, and prospective-memory ability and strategy use. These measures allowed them to test whether people who differed in cognitive ability or everyday tendencies also differed in how strongly they adjusted their mind wandering across the clock task.

Only working memory capacity predicted strategic modulation. Participants with higher working memory capacity showed a larger shift away from mind wandering immediately before the clock task reached its highest-demand point. Fluid intelligence, trait mind wandering, and the prospective-memory measures did not predict the pattern.

This distinction matters. The result was not simply that people with higher general cognitive ability wandered less. Instead, working memory capacity was associated with how strongly mind wandering changed as the task moved from a relatively undemanding stretch toward a predictable response.

The authors suggest that people who are better at actively maintaining goal-relevant information may also be better able to modulate mind wandering around an approaching demand. That is an interpretation of the association, however, not proof of the precise mental process producing it.

What a clock on a screen can and cannot tell you

The limits are substantial. This was a laboratory task with an unusually clear demand curve, a visible schedule, and a response that occurred at regular 20-second intervals. Everyday attention is rarely organized so neatly. A difficult moment during a workday may arrive without warning, and the consequences of missing it may be less immediate than a recorded task error.

The study therefore does not establish that people successfully time their mind wandering during meetings, driving, administrative work, or other real-life activities. Those examples make the pattern recognizable, but extending the laboratory result to them requires further evidence.

It is also important to separate the replication from the study’s new contribution. The strategic clock-task pattern was originally reported in 2018. The 2025 study replicated that pattern and added evidence that working memory capacity, unlike the other measured individual differences, was associated with how strongly participants modulated their mind wandering.

The resulting reframe is narrower than the idea of attention as a resource being rationed, but it remains meaningful. In this predictable task, drifting was not indifferent to what participants would soon need to do. Mind wandering declined as the critical moment approached, particularly among people with higher working memory capacity.

That does not make every lapse useful or every return to focus strategic. It does show that drifting attention is not always evidence of indiscipline or a complete failure of control. Under the right conditions, the mind can move away from a task and still become more focused as the moment that matters draws near.
