Let’s face it: the phrase “open-minded” gets thrown around a lot these days.
And I suppose most of us see ourselves as “open-minded” to some extent. You know how it is; we occasionally watch a foreign language film or try eating some ‘exotic’ cuisine.
But true open-mindedness is often confused, and many who truly have this rare quality don’t even realize it.
It certainly isn’t about being different for the sake of it or to impress our friends…“backpackers” I’m talking to you.
If you possess these seven character traits, however, you are more genuinely open-minded than you think.
Let’s dive in.
1) You can embrace uncertainty
Ever found yourself at a crossroads, faced with the unfamiliar, and instead of retreating to the comfort of the known, you felt a spark of curiosity?
Maybe it was a new job, a strange city, or an unexpected turn in a conversation. If your first instinct wasn’t to run for the hills but to explore this new terrain with a sense of wonder and openness, then you’ve got a trait that’s central to being open-minded.
Genuinely open-minded individuals don’t just tolerate uncertainty; they welcome it in the knowledge that it can offer new perspectives and possibilities.
It isn’t about being reckless or wandering aimlessly, however. It’s about asking questions, seeking understanding, and being comfortable with the fact that sometimes, there are no immediate answers.
2) You are flexible in your beliefs
This one is pretty obvious.
One of the most significant indicators of an open mind is the ability to adapt beliefs when presented with new information. It’s not about being fickle or easily swayed; it’s about being thoughtful and flexible enough to recognize when a change in understanding is warranted.
Think back to a time when you encountered information that challenged a long-held belief. Did you dismiss it out of hand, or did you pause and consider it?
Open-minded individuals know that clinging too tightly to beliefs, especially in the face of contradictory evidence, can limit growth and understanding.
This trait isn’t just intellectual; it’s practical. It allows those with this trait to navigate a world that is constantly changing and evolving.
In fact, the World Economic Forum included “flexibility” as one of the most important skills in their The Future of Jobs Report 2023.
And it’s hardly a surprise; by adapting our beliefs, we stay relevant and engaged with the world around us, able to make informed decisions and understand complex issues more deeply.
But if you are a truly open-minded person, you not only have this ability to adapt your views, you take it a step further by doing this next thing.
3) You seek diversity
It’s one thing to passively listen to opposing opinions; it’s quite another to actively engage with them, seeking to understand and learn.
Think about your circle of friends, the books you read, or the news sources you trust. Do they all echo similar thoughts and beliefs, or do you find yourself surrounded by a rich variety of perspectives?
If it’s the latter, you’re demonstrating a key trait of open-mindedness.
Open-minded people understand that wisdom doesn’t reside in an echo chamber. They relish the chance to have their ideas challenged and to engage in discussions that might not align with their preconceived notions.
This doesn’t mean you agree with everything you hear; it’s about the willingness to consider it seriously.
If you find yourself naturally gravitating towards conversations, books, or media that offer a different view from your own, you are more open-minded than most and possibly more than you realize.
4) You’re humble
In a world that often rewards the loudest or most confident voice, admitting to not having all the answers is a refreshing sign of open-mindedness.
Have you ever found yourself in a discussion, and instead of pretending to know something, you openly admitted your ignorance?
That’s a moment of genuine open-mindedness.
It shows a willingness to learn and an understanding that no one, no matter how educated or experienced, has all the answers.
This trait is a stark contrast to the ‘know-it-all’ attitude prevalent in closed-minded folks.
So, if you find yourself comfortably saying, “I don’t know, but I’d love to learn more,” you might just be more open-minded than you give yourself credit for.
5) You are naturally curious

Remember that I mentioned watching a foreign language movie or trying exotic dishes at the beginning of this post?
Well, genuinely open-minded people do things like this. However, it’s not because they want to tell other people or because they feel that they should. They have a real desire to explore and experience.
Of course, this trait extends beyond such simple examples.
Open-minded people view learning as a perpetual adventure, one without a final destination. They relish the process of acquiring new knowledge, understanding different perspectives, and evolving their thinking over time.
This approach to learning is not about accumulating facts; it’s about developing a richer, deeper understanding of the world and oneself.
Reflect on your approach to learning new things in general. Is it the final achievement that drives you, or do you find satisfaction in the process itself, with its twists, turns, and revelations?
If it’s the process, it’s a strong indicator of open-mindedness.
This trait also manifests in how you handle discussions and debates. Do you engage in conversations just to win or prove a point, or do you participate to explore ideas and gain insights, regardless of whether you ‘win’ the argument?
That is, open-minded individuals approach discussions as learning opportunities rather than battlegrounds.
By the way, “Curiosity and lifelong learning” also made the World Economic Forum’s top 10 skills in their Future of Jobs Report, so if you have been nodding along recognizing yourself in these examples, you are likely better prepared than most for what’s to come.
6) You are resilient
Resilience is the unsung hero trait of open-minded individuals.
Think about the last time you faced a significant challenge or failure. Did it completely derail you, or did you find a way to learn from it, perhaps even using it as a stepping stone to a new understanding or approach?
Using it as a stepping stone is resilience in action.
You see, open-minded people know that with enough perspective, any setback can be overcome. Not only that, they can appreciate the opportunity to expand their perspective.
This is not to say that they enjoy failure or hardship, but they see value in these experiences.
So, if you find yourself standing back up, dusting off, and moving forward with new wisdom after a fall, you’re showcasing a powerful blend of resilience and open-mindedness.
7) You are empathetic
How do you react when someone shares their experiences when they’re vastly different from your own? Do you try to truly understand where they’re coming from, or do you judge?
Open-minded individuals strive to genuinely comprehend and feel what others are going through, even if it’s a world away from their own experiences.
It’s about seeing through someone else’s eyes and if possible, walking a mile in their shoes. This level of empathy opens doors to new understandings and connections that superficial interactions can’t achieve.
If you often find yourself deeply affected by the experiences of others and if this empathy drives you to broaden your own perspectives and change your actions, then you’re demonstrating a key trait of open-mindedness.
And again, it will likely stand to you; empathy came in as the 10th most important skill in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Work report.
The bottom line
Open-mindedness is more than just a way of thinking; it’s a way of living.
It involves a series of character traits that go beyond the surface and delve into how we interact with the world and why.
If you see these traits in yourself, lucky you. It’s a valuable quality, one that opens doors to new experiences, deeper connections, and a richer understanding of the world.
And if not, remember, they can be developed.
Until next time.
