The spiritual dilemma: 7 reasons why you’re attracted and repelled at the same time

Ever felt like you’re standing at the crossroads of your spiritual journey, torn between diving in deeper and running away?

Trust me, you’re not alone. I’ve been there — eager to explore spirituality, yet apprehensive about what I’d find.

It’s like staring at the ocean; you’re drawn to its vast, mesmerizing beauty, but also intimidated by its unknown depths.

If this rings true for you, stick around. This article will shed light on the reasons why you’re both attracted to and repelled by spirituality, all from the heart of someone who’s felt the same tension.

1) Fear of the unknown

The first hurdle many of us encounter on our spiritual path is the chilling fear of the unknown.

When I started my journey, I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff, captivated by the expansive sky above but also terrified of the drop below.

What will happen if you dive deep into spirituality? Will it challenge the beliefs you’ve held all your life? Will it make you question your purpose, your relationships, or even your own self?

The uncertainty can be paralyzing. It’s the same feeling you get when you stand at the mouth of an unexplored cave.

You’re intrigued by the mystery, tantalized by the idea of discovering hidden treasures, ancient wisdom, or a greater understanding of yourself. Yet, the darkness inside is daunting.

This fear of what you’ll uncover is both a magnet pulling you towards spirituality and a repelling force driving you away.

The irony is, the more you resist because of fear, the more you feel called to explore. It’s a complicated dance between curiosity and caution.

Acknowledge that fear is a part of the journey; it’s a sign that you’re about to step out of your comfort zone, which is exactly where personal growth begins.

2) Losing control

Embarking on a spiritual journey often means relinquishing some control, and let’s face it, losing control can be terrifying.

In my early days of exploring spirituality, I struggled with the idea of surrendering to a higher power or universal force. Would I lose my sense of self? Would it mean giving up my ambitions or my carefully laid out plans?

The concept of letting go is central to many spiritual philosophies, but for someone who’s used to being in the driver’s seat, this can feel counterintuitive.

You worry about what you might have to give up — your routines, your beliefs, maybe even your logical way of seeing the world.

It’s like letting go of the wheel while you’re driving; the thought alone can cause anxiety.

This push-and-pull creates a dilemma. You’re attracted to the peace and balance that spirituality promises, but you’re also concerned about what you’ll lose in the process.

The key here is understanding that surrendering control doesn’t mean losing yourself; rather, it opens the door to a deeper understanding of who you truly are.

3) Social consequences

When I first delved into spirituality, one thing that gave me pause was how others would react. Society has certain norms, and stepping outside of them often comes with a social price tag.

You might worry that friends or family will view your spiritual pursuits as quirky, or even question your judgement. There’s a vulnerability in breaking from the crowd, and that’s intimidating.

Some of us even fear the loss of important relationships. Your significant other might not understand your newfound interest in meditation, or your friends might roll their eyes when you start talking about energy healing

And these social consequences can make you question whether the spiritual path is worth walking.

The dilemma here is clear: you’re drawn to spirituality because it feels personally meaningful, but you’re also aware that it might set you apart from others in uncomfortable ways.

But remember, true connections are not threatened by personal growth. In fact, embarking on your spiritual journey can enrich your relationships by adding a new layer of depth.

4) Facing inner demons

The spiritual path often requires confronting your inner demons — those fears, insecurities, and past traumas that you’ve perhaps skillfully avoided until now.

In the beginning stages of my own journey, I was both excited and terrified at the prospect of delving into my emotional landscape.

Because let’s be honest, this inner work is challenging. It’s far easier to keep these darker aspects neatly tucked away, maintaining a semblance of emotional equilibrium.

You may wonder if you’re ready to face what’s lurking beneath the surface, and this hesitation is completely natural.

It’s like standing at the edge of a deep pool, contemplating whether to jump in. You know the water might be cold and the initial shock intense, but also that swimming could be invigorating and liberating.

Taking that plunge to confront your inner demons not only propels you further on your spiritual journey but also equips you with the emotional resilience to face life’s challenges.

It’s a pivotal step, one that can transform you in ways you can’t yet imagine.

5) Identity crisis

When I first started exploring spirituality, it was as if I had opened a Pandora’s box of questions about my own identity. What did it mean for the person I had always thought I was?

Suddenly, my past beliefs, my cultural background, and even my personality traits felt like they were up for reassessment.

This whirlwind of self-inquiry can be disorienting. You might start to feel that the ground beneath you is shifting, as old labels and self-concepts no longer seem to fit.

The beliefs you’ve held may suddenly feel limiting or superficial, causing a rupture in your sense of self.

The dilemma is a poignant one. On one hand, you’re attracted to the depth and wholeness that spiritual exploration promises.

On the other, the process threatens to dismantle the identity you’ve built up over years, if not decades.

Yet, what appears to be a crisis can actually be an awakening. Shedding outdated notions of who you are can be liberating, making room for a more authentic version of yourself to emerge.

While the transition might be jarring, the reward is a life lived in closer alignment with your true self.

6) Questions without answers

When you dip your toes into the spiritual realm, be prepared to encounter questions that defy easy answers.

This was a hurdle for me, too. I was used to solving problems, finding solutions, and seeking closure. But spirituality often raises queries like, “What is the meaning of life?” or “What is the nature of consciousness?” that don’t lend themselves to simple explanations.

This lack of definitive answers can be unsettling. We’re programmed to seek certainty, to put things in neat categories.

The ambiguity inherent in spiritual questions can trigger unease and even frustration.

You’re attracted to the profound wisdom spiritual exploration offers, yet repelled by the idea that some things might remain forever elusive.

It’s a paradox that sits at the heart of the spiritual dilemma. You’re drawn to the mystery, to the limitless possibilities that open up when you consider the bigger questions

But a part of you craves resolution, a neat ending to tie up loose ends.

Embracing the uncertainty becomes the lesson here. While you may not find all the answers, the questions themselves become guideposts, steering you toward ever-deeper understanding and acceptance of life’s complexities.

7) Fear of commitment

One of the most daunting aspects I faced on my spiritual journey was the fear of commitment

It felt like stepping into the unknown would tie me down to a rigid lifestyle, replete with daily meditations, rigorous practices, and unbreakable routines. It’s easy to assume that spirituality comes with a rulebook you’ll have to follow for the rest of your life.

This is a common fear that can make you hesitate, holding you back from diving into your spiritual exploration.

But here’s the liberating truth: spirituality doesn’t demand a strict schedule or an irreversible life change. It’s not a one-size-fits-all pathway, nor is it a lifetime sentence.

In fact, you get to define what spirituality means for you. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes a day to reflect, or as elaborate as going on a spiritual retreat.

The choice is yours, and the beauty is, you always have the option to change your mind and go back to your previous way of life.

Commitment in spirituality is not about constraining yourself; it’s about making room for growth and deeper understanding.

And remember, you’re free to navigate this journey on your own terms.

Finding your path in the spiritual maze

In the end, the spiritual dilemma is a call to face yourself, embrace uncertainty, and step into your own power.

I’ve been there, and I know the struggle.

But remember, spirituality is a deeply personal journey with no right or wrong paths, just lessons. Listen to your inner voice, weigh the pros and cons, and make the choice that resonates with you.

You’re not alone, and it’s never too late to start.
