I used to feel like I had no control over my life—then I started doing these 6 morning habits

It was a typical Monday morning. The alarm clock buzzed harshly, jolting me out of a deep sleep. I stumbled into the kitchen, bleary-eyed, and reached for the coffee mug.

As I sipped my caffeine lifeline, my mind began racing through a never-ending to-do list. Work deadlines, errands to run, bills to pay – it was an overwhelming whirlpool of tasks and responsibilities.

I felt like I was perpetually playing catch-up, always a step behind my life instead of leading it.

But here’s the thing: It doesn’t have to be this way.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you lack control over your life, know that you’re not alone—and more importantly, know that there are practical steps you can take to regain your equilibrium.

In this article, we’ll explore seven morning habits that helped me reclaim my life. These simple yet powerful practices transformed my mornings from a chaotic scramble into a serene and purposeful start to my day.

Ready to dive in? Let’s begin.

1. Mindful meditation

In the early morning hustle, it’s all too easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of tasks that await us.

We’re often mentally darting from one thing to another, even before our day has properly begun.

That’s why I chose to start my day with mindful meditation.

This practice involves simply sitting quietly and focusing on your breath, allowing thoughts to come and go without judgment. It might sound simple, but the effects are profound.

As I started meditating each morning, I noticed that I became more aware of my thoughts and emotions. Instead of being pulled into a vortex of worry or stress, I was able to observe these sensations without getting lost in them.

Beyond this heightened self-awareness, meditation also offered me a sense of calm and grounding that stayed with me throughout the day.

It was like a serene island amidst the turbulent sea of daily life—a place I could return to whenever things felt overwhelming.

What’s great about it is that it doesn’t require hours of your time or any special equipment. Even just a few minutes each morning can make a significant difference.

So why not give it a try? Just sit quietly and focus on your breath. You might be surprised at how much this simple practice can transform your mornings—and your life.

2. Yoga stretches

After my morning meditation, I found it beneficial to incorporate some gentle yoga stretches into my routine.

Why yoga? Well, yoga is a fantastic way to wake up the body and get the blood flowing. It’s like giving your body a gentle nudge, saying, “Hey, it’s time to wake up and embrace the day!”

But it’s not just about the physical benefits. The beauty of yoga lies in its ability to unite mind and body.

As I move through different poses, focusing on my breath and paying attention to how my body feels, I become more present and grounded.

Yoga helped me cultivate a deeper sense of connection with myself. It was no longer just about stretching my muscles or staying fit—it was about honoring my body and showing it some much-needed love and care.

If you’re new to yoga, don’t worry! There are plenty of beginner-friendly poses that you can start with.

I recommend starting with a few simple stretches like Child’s Pose, Cat-Cow Pose, or Downward-Facing Dog.

The key is to listen to your body and move in a way that feels good for you. After all, yoga is not about perfecting a pose—it’s about connecting with yourself on a deeper level.

3. Nourishing breakfast

We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and there’s a good reason for that.

Starting the day with a nourishing breakfast can fuel your body and mind, setting a positive tone for the rest of your day.

In my pre-mindful mornings, I’d often skip breakfast or grab something quick and processed on the go.

But as I began to prioritize my morning routine, I realized the importance of feeding my body with wholesome and nutritious food.

Now, I take the time to prepare a balanced breakfast—think whole grains, protein, fruits, and healthy fats.

Not only does this give me sustained energy throughout the morning, but it also signals to my body that I’m taking care of it.

It’s a small act of love towards myself that has a significant impact on my mood and mindset.

4. Intention setting

Speaking of mindset, I’ve found that setting an intention for the day can significantly influence how my day unfolds.

It’s like setting a compass for my thoughts, actions, and interactions.

To set an intention, I simply ask myself: “What do I want to focus on today?”

The answer could be anything from “Cultivating patience” to “Practicing gratitude” or even “Prioritizing self-care.”

It’s a personal mantra that guides me throughout the day.

By setting an intention each morning, I create a touchstone that I can return to when things get hectic or stressful. It serves as a reminder of what’s truly important and helps me stay aligned with my values and goals.

Your intention doesn’t have to be lofty or complicated. It’s simply a statement that reflects what you want to cultivate in your life. So take a moment each morning to set your intention and see how it influences your day.

5. Gratitude journaling

One of the most transformative practices I’ve incorporated into my morning routine is gratitude journaling.

Taking a few minutes each morning to write down what I’m grateful for has had a profound impact on my perspective and overall mood.

It’s easy to get caught up in what’s wrong or what’s lacking in our lives. But when you focus on gratitude, your attention shifts towards what’s going well, what you appreciate, and all the blessings, big or small, that you often take for granted.

This simple act of acknowledging the good in my life helps me start my day on a positive note. It serves as a reminder that even amidst challenges and setbacks, there’s always something to be grateful for.

6. Digital detox

Finally, one of the most impactful changes I’ve made is implementing a morning digital detox.

Research shows that one of the most common things we do—checking our phones the minute we open our eyes—has a huge impact on our brain. We’re essentially priming our brain for stress and distraction, instead of calm and focus.

So instead of reaching for my phone first thing in the morning and getting sucked into emails, news stories, or social media feeds, I now give myself at least an hour of screen-free time each morning.

True enough, this practice has helped me start my day more intentionally and peacefully. Instead of reacting to external stimuli right off the bat, I am able to proactively set the tone for my day.

You don’t have to completely shun your devices. The goal is simply to create some space between you and your screens so you can start your day on your own terms.

Final thoughts

Transforming my morning routine wasn’t an overnight process. It required patience, commitment, and a willingness to experiment and find what works best for me.

But the results have been worth every effort. These six morning habits have allowed me to regain control of my life, starting each day with intention, positivity, and a sense of calm.

Now, I don’t want you to get stuck on creating a perfect routine or ticking off all the boxes. It’s more about finding practices that resonate with you and help you start your day on a positive note.

So feel free to adapt these habits to suit your lifestyle and preferences. The goal is to create a morning routine that feels nurturing and empowering to you.

As Rudá Iandê so eloquently puts it in his book, “Laughing in the Face of Chaos: A Politically Incorrect Shamanic Guide for Modern Life“:

“Your body is not just a vessel, but a sacred universe unto itself, a microcosm of the vast intelligence and creativity that permeates all of existence.”

Take these words to heart as you embark on your journey towards more mindful mornings and remember that every small step you take towards self-care is a step towards living more intentionally and joyfully.

So why not start tomorrow? Give these morning habits a try and see how they can transform your mornings—and your life.
