1) They avoid risk like the plague

People who unknowingly limit themselves often play it too safe. They stick to the ‘tried and true,’ not out of wisdom, but out of fear.

It’s not that they love where they are so much as they’re scared of where they might end up. The unknown is treated as an automatic danger zone, rather than a space of potential growth and opportunity.

But here’s the thing: growth is nestled snugly between comfort and risk. Without taking chances, we stagnate. 

And stagnation is the silent dream-killer that creeps up on us while we’re busy making ‘safe’ choices.

2) They’re trapped in the comparison trap

You’ve heard it before, right? Comparison is the thief of joy. But let’s dig a little deeper because it’s also a massive roadblock to personal growth.

Psychology introduces us to the concept of social comparison theory. It’s the idea that we determine our own social and personal worth based on how we stack up against others. 

Now, this can be motivating to some extent, but it’s a slippery slope.

Here’s the kicker: when you constantly compare your journey to someone else’s highlight reel — especially in today’s social media-saturated world — you’re setting yourself up for a fall.

8) They resist change

Change is a formidable force, one that can either signal new beginnings or, as some might feel, the end of a comfortable era. 

I remember a time when a sudden shift in my career path loomed ahead like an insurmountable mountain. The stability I had known was crumbling, and every instinct urged me to scramble back to the safety of the familiar.

This resistance to change is a trait I’ve noticed in many who unknowingly limit themselves. 

They anchor themselves to routines and known outcomes, not because these are fulfilling, but because they are predictable. Change threatens this security, prompting a retreat into the confines of their comfort zone.

Yet, it was only when I embraced the winds of change that I discovered new landscapes of opportunity. It was terrifying, yes, but also exhilarating. The growth that followed was not in spite of the change, but because of it.

Empathy for our past selves can help us understand why we resist change, but it should also inspire us to gently push beyond these boundaries. 

The comfort zone is a nice place to visit, but living there too long can mean missing out on the life we’re meant to lead—one that’s full of growth, learning, and new horizons.

9) They forget to celebrate small victories
