Have you ever met someone who just seems to light up a room the moment they walk in?
Someone who, no matter what kind of day you’ve had, can make you feel better with just a few words or a simple smile?
It’s not magic or some unique charisma. It’s about possessing certain character traits that make them genuinely lovely to be around.
Drawing from my own experiences and observations, I’ve identified 9 distinct traits that these delightful people commonly share.
In this article, I’m going to explore these traits in detail, so that we all can understand what makes these people so special and, hopefully, maybe even imbibe some of their qualities.
Let’s check them out!
1) They are authentic
First up, people who are lovely to be around are delightfully real. They don’t hide behind masks or put on a show for the world. Instead, they embrace their true selves, with all their strengths and weaknesses.
This doesn’t mean they expose all their vulnerabilities to everyone they meet. It simply means they’re comfortable in their own skin and don’t feel the need to pretend to be someone they’re not.
Their authenticity shines through in their actions, their words, and most importantly, in their interactions with others.
It’s truly a breath of fresh air in a world full of posers and people with a hidden agenda. This sincerity makes them trustworthy and approachable, drawing people towards them.
If you’ve noticed this trait in someone, chances are, you’ve found a person who’s truly lovely to be around.
2) They practice active listening
Ever heard of the term “active listening“? It’s a communication technique used in counselling, training, and conflict resolution.
But here’s the thing, it’s not just for professional settings, it’s a critical skill in our everyday conversations too.
Active listening involves fully focusing on, understanding, and responding to a speaker. It’s about more than just hearing words. It’s about comprehending the complete message being sent.
When you’re with someone who practices active listening, you feel heard and understood. You know they value your words and are genuinely interested in what you have to say.
And guess what?
This trait is common among people who are truly delightful to be around. They’ll remember details from your conversations, ask follow-up questions, and show empathy.
Their attention is undivided and completely on you when you talk. It’s this level of engagement and respect that makes their company so enjoyable.
3) They know when to stay silent
As active listeners, it naturally follows that people who are lovely to be around know when to stay silent.
It’s a tricky balance for sure, but it seems to come easily to them. They understand that sometimes, what a person needs isn’t advice or words of comfort, but simply a companion who’s willing to sit with them in their silence.
This ability to discern when words are necessary and when they may do more harm than good is a trait that sets these individuals apart.
More than just withholding speech, it’s about providing space – space for thoughts, emotions, and even healing. Which is why, if you’re the one unloading, you’ll come away feeling so much lighter and definitely comforted.
4) They are non-judgmental
Have you ever shared a deep secret or a personal struggle with someone, only to be met with judgment instead of understanding?
It’s an experience most of us would rather avoid.
And that’s where these lovely-to-be-around individuals differ. They listen without passing judgment. They understand that everyone has their own journey, their own struggles, and their own perspectives.
Instead of jumping to conclusions or making snap judgments, they’re open to your perspective and offer support if they can. By creating a safe and non-judgmental space, they encourage open and honest communication.
This acceptance of others, without necessarily having to agree with them, is a trait that makes such people a joy to be around. It allows you to be yourself, without fear of criticism or judgment.
5) They embody empathy
People who are lovely to be around also have a high degree of empathy, which explains why they aren’t judgmental at all.
You see, empathy requires the ability to not just understand, but also to share in other people’s feelings.
My best friend is exactly like this. When I’m feeling down, she’s quite sensitive to that and truly empathizes with me. In fact, we’ve never really had a major fight because she can always put herself in my shoes and see where I’m coming from.
So of course, I find her to be one of the loveliest people to be around!
This ability to empathize allows her, and people like her, to connect with others on a more genuine and intimate level.
Here are some ways they express their empathy:
- They validate your feelings and experiences.
- They show genuine concern for your wellbeing.
- They offer support, even if it’s just a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on.
Their empathetic nature makes them not just lovely to be around, but also comforting during difficult times.
6) They are positively contagious
Why do you find a lovely person lovely? Probably because of the way they make you feel!
Ever noticed how their enthusiasm and positivity rub off on you? One moment you’re having a rough day, and the next, their infectious optimism has you believing that things will get better.
I’ve found that people who are lovely to be around have a knack for spreading positivity. They radiate joy, optimism, and a zest for life that’s hard to resist.
Let’s be clear: they’re not blindly optimistic or oblivious to life’s challenges. They acknowledge the negatives but choose to focus on the positives.
Their energy is uplifting, and their spirit is contagious. They inspire us not just to be better, but also to see the world in a more positive light.
In their company, we find ourselves laughing a little louder, smiling a little more, and feeling a bit better about life.
I guess it’s true what they say – we may forget what people say, but we won’t forget how they made us feel. In this case, they make us feel good, and that’s definitely unforgettable!
7) They are appreciative
Imagine going out of your way to do something nice for someone, only to have your efforts go unnoticed. Doesn’t feel too great, does it?
Now picture the opposite scenario. You do something small, perhaps even insignificant, for someone and they express their heartfelt gratitude. Makes you feel appreciated, doesn’t it?
People who are lovely to be around understand the power of appreciation. They’re quick to express their gratitude, not just for grand gestures, but also for the little things that often go unnoticed.
They don’t just say “thank you,” they find specific ways to express how your actions made a difference to them. And it always comes across as sincere, so you feel very much valued.
8) They show respect for all
And they do it equally, regardless of one’s stature or position in life.
Basically, they value and respect people for who they are, not for what they can offer.
I remember meeting an old friend after many years. Despite his soaring career and success, he treated everyone at the reunion with the same respect and kindness, from our former teachers to the waitstaff serving us.
This humility and regard for others, irrespective of their status or role, left a lasting impression on me. It was a reminder that respect is not about positions or power, but about recognizing and valuing the humanity in each one of us.
Such people make you feel seen, heard, and respected – a surefire way to win hearts and be truly delightful to be around.
9) They spread love
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, people who are lovely to be around spread love.
Their actions, their words, their demeanor – everything about them resonates with love and kindness. They treat others with compassion, understanding, and a genuine interest in their welfare.
They’re quite well-versed in the love languages – you can easily find them:
- Lending a helping hand
- Sharing a kind word or a compliment
- Being fully present in their interactions
- Giving someone a thoughtful gift
- Doling out warm hugs and kisses
No wonder their presence leaves everyone around them feeling fantastic. Not to mention inspired!
Final thoughts
So, which of these traits do you already possess? Which ones would you like to cultivate further?
A few reminders before we end:
- These traits are not about pleasing others or seeking approval. They’re about becoming a more loving, empathetic, and authentic version of ourselves.
- No one is perfect. We all have room for growth and improvement. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re lacking in some areas.
- Small changes can make a big difference. Sometimes, it’s the little things that have the most significant impact.
As we strive to embody these traits, let’s also remember to appreciate those who already exhibit them in our lives. After all, they’re the ones who make our days brighter and our lives richer!
