How to stay grounded when the world feels like it’s falling apart

Many people are feeling uncertain right now—and for good reason. Around the world, we’re seeing more extreme weather, rising costs of living, and a sense that the systems we’ve trusted for years aren’t working like they used to. It can feel overwhelming.

But in the middle of all this change, there’s also a chance to stop, reflect, and ask: what really matters?

While we can’t go back to how things were, we can choose how we move forward—and focus on what we can still protect, create, and care for. As author and activist Sarah Wilson puts it, we may be too late to save the old way of living—but it’s not too late to save what truly counts.

I’ve felt this uncertainty too. Some days it feels like the world is spinning faster than I can keep up. I catch myself doom-scrolling the headlines, feeling anxious about the future—not just for myself, for the planet, for everything we’re connected to.

But I’ve also learned, through years of reflection and self-coaching, that this is exactly when we need to come back to ourselves. To ground ourselves in what we can control. To focus on the small, meaningful actions that help us feel steady and purposeful—even when the world feels unsteady.

For me, that grounding often starts with something simple: journaling. Putting pen to paper helps me make sense of what I’m feeling, what I value, and what really matters right now. Some days, it’s a quiet walk in nature where I let my thoughts settle.

Other times, it’s reconnecting with someone I care about or taking a moment to breathe deeply and remember I don’t have to have all the answers. These small acts don’t fix the world—but they help me show up to it with more clarity, calm, and strength.

So if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or unsure lately, you’re not alone. The world is shifting, and it’s okay to feel unsteady. But you don’t have to stay stuck in that place.

3 simple ways to stay grounded when the world feels unsteady

You don’t need grand solutions or perfect plans. Just a few small, steady practices can make a real difference. Here are three that I return to often:

1. Create a calm space for reflection

Whether it’s journaling, quiet meditation, or simply sitting with a cup of tea, creating space to reflect helps settle the nervous system and bring your focus back to what matters. In a world that’s constantly noisy and demanding, carving out even ten minutes of stillness can become a quiet act of self-respect.

Personally, I keep a notebook by my bedside. I don’t write perfectly—just honestly. Sometimes just naming the worry helps me let it go. Other times, I ask myself one simple question: What do I need right now? That pause gives me clarity, and over time, it’s become one of the most powerful habits in my life.

2. Anchor to your values

When things feel chaotic, reconnecting with your values—like kindness, courage, simplicity, or connection—can give you a strong inner compass. Values help us remember who we are, even when the world feels unfamiliar or overwhelming. They offer a way to make decisions with integrity, rather than fear.

One of my core values is contribution. Even on hard days, if I can help someone else feel heard or supported, it reminds me of who I am and what I stand for. Living from this place doesn’t solve everything, but it keeps me steady. And in a time of so much change, that steadiness is gold.

3. Return to nature

Nature has a quiet, steady rhythm that reminds us we’re part of something bigger. Whether it’s a walk, a garden, or simply looking at the sky, being in nature brings calm. It’s not about escaping the world, but about remembering that slowness, cycles, and renewal are natural—and available to us, too.

When I feel overwhelmed, I take a walk along the water or through a local park. The movement clears my head—and the trees remind me to slow down. I often come back not with answers, but with perspective. And sometimes, that’s all we need to keep going.

In uncertain times, it’s easy to feel like we’re at the mercy of forces far beyond our control. But the truth is, we all have a role to play—not in fixing everything, but in choosing how we meet each moment. We may not be able to stop big systems from collapsing, but we can protect what matters most: our peace of mind, our relationships, our ability to show up with heart.

As poet and Jungian analyst Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estés reminds us, “Do not lose heart. We were made for these times.”

Her words are a quiet call to courage. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just begin where you are. The world may be changing—but so can we.
