If someone displays these 9 behaviors, they probably lack a purpose in life

There’s a significant difference between having a purpose in life and merely existing.

When someone has a purpose, they have a reason to get up in the morning, a goal that drives their actions and decisions.

But what about those who lack this purpose?

Well, they often display specific behaviors that reveal their lack of direction.

In this article, we’re going to identify and discuss these behaviors. If someone you know displays these 9 behaviors, they might be lacking a purpose in life. It’s not as damning as it sounds – it’s simply a sign that they’re still searching for their path.

1) Aimlessness

One of the most telling signs of a lack of purpose is aimlessness.

You see, when someone has a clear purpose or goal, they typically move through life in a specific direction, right?

In this case, their actions are deliberate and focused, and they rarely waver from the path that leads them toward their ambition.

On the other hand, people who lack purpose often seem to drift through life. They might switch jobs frequently without a clear career path, or they may have a wide array of hobbies that they never stick with for long.

This isn’t to say that exploration and trying new things are bad – quite the opposite. However, it’s the lack of commitment and consistency that points towards a lack of purpose.

2) Lack of passion

Another common sign is a lack of passion. It’s a bit like driving a car with an empty fuel tank.

Let me share a personal example.

A few years ago, I found myself stuck in a job that was okay – it paid the bills, and I wasn’t terrible at it. But there was no spark, no excitement. Every day felt monotonous and repetitive.

Luckily, I soon realized that I had no passion for what I was doing. There was no purpose driving me to excel or innovate. I was merely going through the motions, waiting for the weekend.

That’s when I knew something needed to change.

All I knew was that I had to find a purpose, something that would ignite my passion and drive me forward.

And once I found it, my entire perspective shifted.

3) Procrastination

Many of us think that procrastination is a sign of laziness or poor time management.

But believe it or not, it can also indicate a lack of purpose.

Here’s how it works:

When someone has a purpose, they’re motivated to act. They’re driven by a desire to achieve their goal, which gives them the impetus to get started and keep going, even when things get tough.

But what happens when someone doesn’t have a goal or purpose driving them forward?

Well, it’s easy to put things off. After all, if there’s no compelling reason to do something now, why not leave it until later?

Interestingly, a 2023 study published in Environmental Research and Public Health found that there is a significant link between procrastination and high levels of stress.

One interpretation of this is that people who procrastinate more tend to have higher levels of stress and lower levels of self-compassion.

Why?

Because without a clear purpose to guide us, we might struggle to prioritize our tasks and manage our time effectively.

4) Neglecting personal growth

Whether you like to or not, personal growth won’t happen overnight.

It’s a lifelong journey that requires learning, evolving, and striving to become a better version of ourselves. This could be why people who lack purpose neglect their personal growth.

They might resist learning new things or stepping outside of their comfort zone. Or maybe, they avoid taking on challenges or seeking out new experiences. In either case, it’s certain that life lived without purpose can lead to stagnation.

Trust me, without a driving force urging them forward, you might remain stuck in your ways, hesitant to embrace change or pursue personal development.

5) Lack of fulfillment

Fulfillment is a feeling we get when we know we’re making a difference, when we’re contributing to something bigger than ourselves, or simply when we’re living in alignment with our purpose.

Having that in mind, it’s not surprising that when someone lacks a purpose in life, they often feel unfulfilled.

No matter what they do, they might feel as if something is missing.

For instance, they may seem dissatisfied or restless, always searching for something more. Interestingly, this lack of fulfillment isn’t tied to their achievements or possessions.

Even those who seem successful by societal standards can feel unfulfilled if they don’t have a clear sense of purpose guiding their lives.

That’s why I’m sure that if you notice someone who seems perpetually unsatisfied, regardless of their accomplishments or material wealth, it could be a sign that they’re lacking a purpose in life.

Keep in mind that the quest for fulfillment often starts with finding one’s purpose.

6) Feeling lost

This sign is perhaps one of the most poignant indicators of a lack of purpose: feeling lost.

When someone lacks a clear sense of direction in life, it often manifests as a deep-seated feeling of being lost or adrift.

Imagine a ship without a rudder, aimlessly floating in the vast ocean. Without a course to follow or a destination in mind, the ship meanders, subject to the whims of the sea.

Similarly, individuals who feel lost in life lack that guiding ‘rudder’. They might hop from one endeavor to another, never really feeling connected or fully engaged with anything.

A relevant example would be my friend who was always the bright spark in our group, full of potential and promise.

After college, while most of us found our niches, she struggled. She changed careers three times in as many years and seemed perpetually unsure about her next step.

Each time we met, she expressed her confusion and disillusionment, saying she felt like she was wandering in a fog, unable to see the path ahead. It was clear that her lack of purpose wasn’t for want of trying.

Why am I telling you her story?

Because I believe her journey highlights how feeling lost can be a profound experience, signaling the need to find a purpose that provides direction and meaning.

7) Difficulty making decisions

Now I want you to think about something:

How often have we come across someone who seems perpetually stuck at life’s crossroads, unable to decide which path to take?

Well, this indecision is a classic sign of a lack of a clear purpose in life.

The thing is that when you have a purpose, decision-making often becomes more straightforward. Your purpose acts like a compass, guiding your choices and helping you navigate life’s myriad options.

But without this compass, every decision, no matter how small, can feel overwhelming.

Difficulty in making decisions is more than just an inconvenience — it’s a sign of deeper uncertainty about one’s place and direction in life.

It’s a silent cry for a need to find that inner compass – a purpose that makes choices clearer and paths more discernible.

8) Lack of motivation

Lack of motivation can be a subtle yet significant indicator of a missing purpose in life.

To put it another way, when someone doesn’t have a clear goal or passion driving them, their motivation levels often plummet.

This can manifest in various aspects of their life, from professional ambitions to personal endeavors.

That’s why it’s important to recognize that everyone experiences periods of low motivation.

However, when this becomes a persistent state, it’s often a deeper sign of an underlying issue, such as the absence of a purpose.

Consequently, individuals who lack motivation find themselves in a state of inertia, not because they don’t want to do anything, but because they don’t have a compelling reason to propel them forward.

In other words, a lack of motivation can be like a boat without a sail – there’s potential, but no wind to drive it forward.

9) Unhappiness

At the end of the day, our purpose in life is often tied to our happiness.

It’s about finding what brings us joy, fulfillment, and a sense of accomplishment.

When someone lacks a purpose, they may struggle with feelings of unhappiness. They might often seem down, discontented, or simply unexcited about life.

It’s important to note that unhappiness doesn’t necessarily mean depression. Sometimes it can mean a lack of joy or satisfaction in life, a constant feeling that something is missing.

Other times, unhappiness is like a puzzle with a missing piece. You know, when everything else might be in place, but the overall picture still feels incomplete.

This type of unhappiness isn’t just a fleeting emotion – it’s more of a constant undercurrent, affecting how one views life and interacts with the world.

Ultimately, addressing this unhappiness is about finding meaning and joy in the journey of life, not just the destination.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, finding our purpose is often a significant part of this journey.

It’s not something that always comes easily or quickly. For some, it might take years or even decades of exploration, self-discovery, and introspection.

These 9 behaviors could indicate that someone hasn’t yet found their purpose.

But remember, it’s not a judgment or a final verdict. It’s simply a signpost indicating that they might still be on their journey to find their true direction.
