I’ve met people in their fifties, sixties, even eighties who feel more alive than some people half their age.
It has nothing to do with wrinkle creams, gym memberships, or birthday numbers. It has everything to do with how they move through the world.
After retiring from decades of teaching, I’ve had the chance to observe this up close. Some people grow older while staying wonderfully young inside.
They keep a spark that doesn’t dim just because the years pass. And if you pay attention, the habits that keep that spark alive show up again and again.
Here are eight things youthful souls never stop doing, no matter how old they get.
1) They stay curious
Curiosity is one of the clearest signs of a young spirit.
Youthful souls never stop asking questions, exploring new ideas, or trying to understand the world a little better. They’re the people who still take classes in their seventies or pick up new hobbies on a whim.
I see this in my book club every month. The most enthusiastic voices belong to people old enough to be my mother. They aren’t afraid of learning. They’re excited by it.
Curiosity keeps their minds open and their hearts flexible.
2) They keep moving their bodies in ways they enjoy
Youthful energy often comes from simple movement. It doesn’t have to be intense workouts or hours at the gym.
It can be walking in the neighborhood, gardening, stretching, or dancing in the kitchen while making dinner.
What matters is that they don’t let stillness take over their lives. They treat their bodies with appreciation rather than frustration.
The movement keeps them vibrant, and the mindset keeps them young.
3) They laugh often and easily
People with youthful spirits have a wonderful ability to find humor in everyday situations. They don’t take life so seriously that they forget to enjoy it. And they definitely don’t let small inconveniences turn into big complaints.
A former colleague of mine is in her late seventies and still laughs like someone who just heard her first great joke.
There’s a lightness to her that hasn’t faded with age, and her laughter has a way of lifting everyone around her. Joy is one of the most powerful anti aging tools there is.
4) They try new things even when they’re nervous
Trying something new keeps the mind young.
People with youthful spirits don’t let fear stop them from experiencing life. They might feel nervous, sure, but they do it anyway. They take the trip. They taste the unfamiliar dish. They sign up for the workshop.
This willingness to stretch themselves gives their lives a sense of adventure. And as I’ve noticed during retirement, adventure is less about the activity and more about the attitude you bring to it.
5) They maintain meaningful connections
Youthful souls know that relationships keep life full. They make an effort to stay connected, check in on people they care about, and nurture friendships that make them feel seen.
They don’t isolate themselves just because life gets busy or complicated.
I see this with my own little circle of retired friends. We walk together, swap recipes, talk about books, and share stories about our grandchildren. Those connections keep our days bright and our hearts engaged.
6) They stay open to change
This might be the biggest difference between a youthful soul and someone who feels old before their time.
Youthful people don’t resist change with tight fists. They’ve learned that life keeps moving and they might as well move with it.
Instead of saying, “That’s just how I am,” they ask, “What’s next?” They stay adaptable, willing to adjust, and willing to grow. That flexibility keeps their outlook fresh and their energy strong.
7) They keep a sense of wonder
Youthful souls never lose the ability to be moved by small, beautiful things.
A sunrise. A handwritten note. A perfectly ripe peach. A quiet afternoon breeze. They haven’t outgrown awe.
This sense of wonder brings them right back to the present moment, which is something many of us forget to do. When you stay aware of the small beauties around you, every day feels more alive.
8) They nurture their inner life
This might be the most overlooked trait. Youthful souls pay attention to their inner world. They reflect, read, meditate, pray, journal, or simply sit with their thoughts.
They give their emotions room to breathe instead of burying them.
As someone who spends many mornings with a cup of tea and a notebook, I can tell you that tending to your inner life keeps you grounded. It keeps you open, resilient, and centered.
And those qualities make aging feel less like decline and more like unfolding.
Final words
A youthful soul isn’t something you’re born with once and lose over time. It’s something you choose, and keep choosing, every day. If you recognized yourself in even a few of these signs, you’re aging far more gracefully than you might think.
And the best part is that it’s never too late to strengthen any of these habits.
You can grow older without ever feeling old.
